What’s in a name?
#50: A (FINAL for now) 100-word story based on a reconstructed, childhood anecdote
What’s in a name?
When I was about six, and my sister seven, we began playing badminton with our neighbor Rudrajeet. The court lay in an open ground amidst our homes.
Rudrajeet was older, bigger—and an awful sport! We soon began beating him at the game. One day after a loss, Rudrajeet threw down his racquet. Accusing us of cheating, he burst into tears. At that his mother came storming out, scolded us and marched off with her son.
Rudrajeet never played with us again.
One day I asked my mother what “Rudrajeet” meant. She said: one who’s gained victory (jeet) over anger (raudra)!

Hope you enjoyed that 100-word story on a little tale I reconstructed (I’ve forgotten many of the details) from an anecdote in my childhood. The emotional truth of the story is what I offer here. I do remember thinking the poor fellow had a tough road ahead in living up to his name.
Hope you found it somewhat funny, ironic and perhaps a little thought-provoking.
Goodbye to the 100-word tales…
Dear Reader: This was my 50th and FINAL 100-word story. I may come back with more later but for now I’ll be focusing on other forms. More experiments coming soon. Hope you’ll keep reading and telling me what you think!

New Book!
My poetry appears in a new anthology “Being, Becoming, Belonging" (Poetry of Diaspora in Silicon Valley), a beautiful compilation from poets of my community.
It features several of my poems including two about bidding summer goodbye and still finding ourselves when feeling lost.
Yes, one wonders whether or not he lived up to his name! Thanks, Reena.
Funny how we can live up to a given name and sometimes create irony from the name. Lovely Reena and congratulations.
